Sage toaster control board
Problem: IC had blown on control board
Solution: Can't replace IC!
Brand: Sage
Cost new: £120
Cost of fix:0
Age: 9 years
Success?: No
This one was an annoying repair to figure out, the left channel of a toaster wouldn’t turn on and heat up! I could measure the heating elements and they were fine, but the signal to power on the elements never got through. No documentation available so that left me in the dark to reverse-engineer it. Seems that this control board and this IC provides the voltage for a microcontroller portion (toasters obviously need a microcontroller) and that channel is controlled by a microcontroller but not the other one??
Because the right hand channel functioned, the customer was happy to just manage for now with the single channel as I told them any fix I would attempt had the chance of damaging the functionality of the other channel. Always best to err on the side of caution in my opinion.
